VOID: Why do I Feel Void and How to Respond to the Feeling of Void?

Feeling void or empty is a feeling most of us don’t want to be associated with. Quite often, we try to ignore or suppress this feeling without fully understanding its purpose. But could God be conveying a message to you and me through this feeling of void? Think about it for a second! Doesn’t the Bible say, “To everything there is a season, A time for every purpose under the heaven” (Ecclesiastes 3:1, NKJV)? Therefore, there is a purpose for the feeling of void you and I experience every so often.

With everything in life, I look to the Bible for answers. I search the Scriptures to know how God the Father, Lord Jesus, the Holy Spirit, and His people respond to situations. I do this because of Matthew 4:4 and Joshua 1:8, which says, “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God” and “This book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.”

Now, back to the topic of void. From the Bible, we are told that God’s word does not return to Him void but accomplishes the purpose for which it is sent (Isaiah 55:11, NKJV). We are also told that the Scripture cannot be broken (John 10:35, NKJV), meaning there is no room for gaps, emptiness or voids in God’s word. We are told further by Lord Jesus in Matthew 5:18 that all of God’s laws must be fulfilled, meaning that the laws of God must come to completion (i.e. no room for void). All this is saying is that a void is a state of incompletion waiting for you and me to bring to completion.

The truth is that void has existed since creation began, and through the Scriptures, we learnt that God’s response to the void was to create. For Genesis 1:1-2 says:

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep. (Genesis 1:1-2, NKJV)

God created the earth when the earth was without form and void. In order words, He filled the void. God occupied the void with His creation. He created things to fill the emptiness. He called forth things into place or existence. Each time God encountered a void in His creation, He created something to fill the void (Genesis 1:1-31, NKJV). For example:

  • He created Light and separated the Light from darkness, thereby bringing formation to the earth.
  • He made the sky and filled the void in the sky with the sun, moon, stars, and birds.
  • He created the Garden of Eden and filled the void with Adam, Eve, animals, trees, plants, etc.
  • He removed the rib of Adam and filled that void by creating Eve and bringing her to Adam.
  • He made the seas and filled them with sea creatures.
  • He caused grass, herbs, and trees to grow from the ground to fill the void.

Our CREATOR did not run away from the void, nor did He ignore it or suppress it. Instead, He brought forth His creative ability and began to create and work until everything He made was good (Genesis 1:1-31, NKJV).

Therefore, the feeling of void or emptiness is a call for you and me to create, fill, and occupy. It is a call for us to partner with our CREATOR and walk in our God-ordained assignments. Void is a call for us to step into our destiny and manifest God’s glory. It is a call for us to bring things to life, and whether we would like to accept it or not, the feeling of void seems to be part of life’s journey.

I believe that when we feel void, God is knocking on the door of our hearts to remind us of who we are. He is calling us to a place of creativity and growth. God is prompting us to birth that which He has placed within us. He is awakening us.

It is His way of motivating us to create something new, live a life of purpose, step into our calling, and move and shift things around. God is telling you and me to arise and put things into place, order, and formation. Remember, we are made in His image because Genesis 1:26-27 says:

Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness…” So God created man in His image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. (Genesis 1:26-27, NKJV)

The Almighty God, the King of kings and the Lord of lords, created us in His image. Therefore, we must learn from Him and do things as He does. Lord Jesus said this perfectly when He said, “Most assuredly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of Himself, but what He sees the Father do; for whatever He does, the Son also does in like manner.” (John 5:19, NKJV)

Like Lord Jesus Christ, we must do what the Father does and do it the way the Father would. Our Heavenly Father saw a void at the beginning of creation, and He went to work and created the earth to fill it. We, too, must become like our CREATOR! We must become creators! The ability to create is within you and me. Creativity is in us. We are pregnant with creativity because the CREATOR of creators made us.

Do you know that the very first miracle that Lord Jesus did was to fill a void? According to John 2:1-11, there was a wedding in Cana of Galilee that Lord Jesus, His mother, and His disciples went to when a situation arose wherein they ran out of wine. To which Lord Jesus responded and filled the void. He created a wine superior to the wine the guests were drinking and thus manifested His glory. Like His Father, what He made was also good.

In fact, throughout the life of Lord Jesus as a Man on the earth, He filled voids. For instance:

  • He brought healing to those who were void of health.
  • He preached the gospel to the poor.
  • He proclaimed liberty to those who were in captivity.
  • He gave sight to those who were who were void of sight.
  • He healed the broken-hearted.

Lord Jesus filled the void of all those His Father sent to Him by meeting their needs. His very existence on the earth is to fill the void of lifelessness, for He Himself said in John 10:10, “I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.”

Again, He said, “For the things concerning Me have an end” (Luke 22:37, NKJV), implying that all that is written about Him must come to fruition or completion. This is why when He was on the cross, He said, “It is finished!” (John 19:30, NKJV).

Basically, what He meant by that statement on the cross is that He has closed the gaps in His life, He has filled all voids concerning His life, He has put together the missing pieces that the prophets prophesied, He has fulfilled the mystery surrounding His life, and He has completed the mission His Father sent Him to do on the earth.

So, you see, we feel void or empty because an assignment is waiting for us to complete. This feeling of void or emptiness is not designed to destroy us but to drive a change in us. It is there to pull us out of stagnation, out of the norm, out of the routine, out of the usual, and out of the mundane. This feeling of void is meant to push us into destiny, causing us to align with God’s will, purposes, and plans, eventually leading to a life of fulfilment. So, you see, we are created to fill voids!

Do you remember what Lord Jesus said when His disciples told Him to Eat? He told them, “I have food to eat which you do not know…My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me, and to finish His work.” (John 4:32-34, NKJV). In order words, Lord Jesus is saying that doing the will of His Father keeps Him full, and as long as He remains doing His Father’s will, He fills the void.

Likewise, we must do the will of the Father. We must be about our Heavenly Father’s business. We must work on what our Heavenly Father is telling us to work on; by so doing, we fill the void and become fulfilled.

The Holy Spirit, the Spirit of truth who is our Helper, Teacher, and Comforter, also came to the earth to fill voids, for it is written:

When the Day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly, there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. Then there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them. And they were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, and the Spirit gave them utterance. (Acts 2:1-4, NKJV)

The Spirit of God filled the void in the disciples and gave them utterance! The Holy Spirit filled the void of powerlessness in their lives by filling them with power, for the Scripture says:

You shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you. (Acts 1:8, NKJV).

What the Holy Spirit did in the lives of the apostles, He is still doing today to those who submit and yield to Him.

So, my dear friends, if God the Father, Lord Jesus, and the Holy Spirit fill the voids they encounter, who are we not to respond in a like manner? Thus, I say to you, respond to the void this year! Respond to the void by bringing to life those dreams, ideas, and thoughts God has placed in you! Respond to the void by working on things God has laid upon your heart.

You should respond to the void by being you and doing the things you love. You should respond to the void by working on things you are good at and that come easily to you. This is how you and I fill the void, close the gap, push the darkness, and shine the light of God this year.

Have you ever noticed your joy and excitement when doing something new you love? I know I have! Each time I step into what I believe the Lord is calling me to do, I feel recharged, rejuvenated, empowered, energised and alive. I feel a deep sense of joy and tend to have more patience and tolerance for people.

Therefore, Arise and begin to create. Now is the set time! This is the hour! Now is the year! The stage is set and I believe the door is open. What are you waiting for? Come on, begin to create, begin to make something, begin to generate something, begin to produce something, begin to craft something, and begin to construct something. The ability to create is in you! It is in me! It is in us! Come, let us create together:

New technologiesNew movies
New TV channelsNew TV shows
New jobsNew ministries
New businessesNew social media platforms
New relationshipsNew cars
New blogsNew fashion lines
New booksNew inventions
New investmentsNew medical instruments
New mineral processing technologiesNew policies
New political partiesNew languages

So many new things are waiting for you and me to create. It is all a matter of starting. So, let us set our hearts to become the creators we were born to be. Let us stir up our God-given potential and fill the void in our lives, families, workplace, environment, and world.

I remember Genesis 1:28 when God blessed Adam and Eve and told them to fill the earth. The Bible says:

Then God blessed them, and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it…” (Genesis 1:28, NKJV)

You see, God wants us to fill the earth. He wants us to fill any void we see or encounter. Our Heavenly Father wants us to use the gifts He has given us to fill the void in our lives and the earth. We must create room to birth those ideas and dreams He has placed in us. They are unique to each of us.

You and I are born to be creators! We are born to fill the void. Even our physical bodies teach us that a void needs to be filled. When you eat, you are filling the void of hunger. When you drink water, you are filling the void of thirst.

Finally, I want to leave you with this to think about. I did some digging and discovered that the top 10 billionaires on earth right now are founders or investors. They are all creators. All these billionaires saw something missing and went in to fill the void. Whether they knew it at the time or not, they have applied one of the key principles of Genesis 1: to fill the void.

My friends, God’s WORD is the truth, and those who follow His principles reap the reward! Therefore, follow the principle of Genesis 1 this year and fill the void you see in and around you. Become the creator that the CREATOR of creators made you to be.

May the Spirit of the Lord give you the knowledge, wisdom, and understanding needed to create and fill voids.
